    Here A Quote, There A Quote

    Every once in a while I come across a quote that makes me stop and think. Really think.

    I often wonder how much of it is the quote itself, and how much of it is the timing of the quote.

    Either way, those “it” quotes often motivate me into action or simply remind me of something I might be too tired or weak to see at a particular moment. A few favorites have found their way into my office via a sign, a trinket box, a treasured card. A few have been shared by friends. And still others are just engraved in my thoughts, lurking, waiting for that moment when I need the pick-me-up.

    Perhaps one of my favorite quotes at the moment was given to me by my best friend. It says…

    Courage. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

    I look at that quote a lot. Because, in an odd way, reading those words over and over gives me courage when I’m running low.

    A different and more sentimental quote came from that same friend as part of a birthday gift. It’s on the top of a red box where I keep special writing memories (which, as of now, consists of… an email from said friend when my first book was picked up; a congratulations card; the handwritten sticky note to return “a Louise Leftwich with Malice Domestic’s” phone call; two of my favorite congratulations emails after my Agatha nom in 2006; the Worldwide Mystery mass market paperback version of my first book; my first fan letter; and a print-out of my “sold out” status with Worldwide). The quote on the top says…

    “It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer.”

    A great kick-in-the-butt quote came from another very special person at a time I needed to hear it most. It was something like this one…

    The only people who never fail are those who never try.

    And then there’s the one that was like an unexpected gift of understanding from someone I’ve never met, yet has been a coach of sorts in learning how to handle a curveball. His words still bring a catch to my throat. Mainly because the timing is as poignant now as it was when it was said…

    “There’s nothing wrong with a little violin playing between two people who know the same tune.”

    Sigh.

    Then there’s Scott, my walking off-the-cuff quote guy. You can’t get through a five minute conversation with this man without stopping and thinking–really thinking–multiple times. This particular wisdom-filled quote made me see something in a different light…

    “It’s like on the airplane when they tell people traveling with small children to put their own oxygen on first. When you breathe easier, they’ll breathe easier.”

    Finally there’s the one I read in a store once. It was something about life, surfing, an ocean wave, and momentum. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, I could sure use those words right about now.

    1. I have a quote guy myself. He was my editor when I wrote a column for our college paper and is still a close friend. This one is my favorite:

    3. Laura,
      I love your quotes–can I steal them (not for my writing but for my life?). Here are a few I really like:

      “Love despite not because.”

      As I look at my children and see adults, I’m reminded “The days crawl but the years fly.”

      And from a friend during a very dark year, “Sometimes, when nothing seems to be going right, it’s because something amazing is about to happen.”

    6. One of my all time favorites was in a a Fortune Cookie in a South Bend, IN Chinese hole-in-the-wall & it was perfect timing:

    8. Cynthia, some of my favorites come from cartoons. I believe it was Eyeore that said, “it’s the things we overlook that hurt most when they’re gone.” Pretty poetic.

    9. LOOOVE quotes! I don’t always use them for inspiration but rather to keep everything in perspective.

      Two of my faves from my very own (McLean Jacobson) website:

      “Having been unpopular in high school is not just cause for book publications.”

      “A great many people now reading and writing would be better employed keeping rabbits.”
      - Edith Sitwell

      But my latest fave is from my very own agent, who said in his first response to my query:

      “I’m a few hundred pages in and loving it.” :D

    10. No collection of quotes would be complete without one from Twain. This is undeservedly obscure. He said it about the Sultan of Turkey, but I thought of it when I was nominated for a couple awards last year.

      “You could lay a trap in the night and catch twelve more able men.”

      I love the specificity of that number 12.

    11. You can learn a lot from cartoon quotes. Consider the following bits of wisdom:

      “Boogity, boogity, boogity, boys. Let’s go racin’!”-Darrell Cartrip/Waltrip (Don’t put off what you can do right now.)

      “Luigi follow only the Ferraris.”-Luigi (Don’t wast your time worrying about the little stuff.)

      “Pit stop!”-Guido (Take time to smell the roses.)or(Go to the bathroom before you leave the house.)

      “Git-r-done!”-Mater (Follow through.)

      “I’m happier than a tornado in a trailer park.”-Mater (Enjoy the little things.)

      “Dip me in axle grease and call me slick!”-Unnamed RV (Delight in the unexpected.)

      “Race cars don’t need headlights because the track is always lit.”-Lightning McQueen (You don’t have to try and keep up with the Jonses.)

      “Ka-chow!”-Lightning McQueen (That pretty much says it all.)

    13. Regina, the high school one is interesting. There was a reason most of us were observing. It’s not cuz we were shy, we were stalking our literary victims (read that basic thing on a button at a conference once).

      David, yeah the specificity is interesting.

      Beth, Hmmm. What to say, what to say. I wonder if some of the male readers would have a different take on one of the Mater ones. :wink:

      Somebody, if you’re the somebody you’re supposed to be…yeah, you said violin. A glockenspiel might have ruined the sentiment somehow. No?

    15. I had to laugh at seeing all of the Cars quotes. My 2 year old is on a Cars kick and we watch it at least twice a day.
