My latest obsession is a 1970s British crime series called THE PROFESSIONALS. Fifty-seven digitally re-mastered episodes–that I haven’t stopped watching since I bought them from Amazon.uk a month ago. First I watched them on my laptop. Then I bought a cheap region-free DVD player and now I’m watching them in my office. When I should be writing.
I always write with old movies or DVDs playing in the background, but I find THE PROFESSIONALS way too distracting. I actually watch it. A lot.

It’s a long time since I’ve enjoyed dumb TV this much — and this show most definitely has its classic DUMB moments. Like the episode I’m watching now: “Wild Justice.” Enough plot holes to throw a motorcycle through, regular characters behaving out-of-character–you name it. But you’ll notice that I am watching it all the same.
Do you have entertainment obsessions? Do you fall in love with certain TV shows or CDs or DVDs and find you are … glutting yourself on them? Is it just me? And if it is just me, can you at least admit to loving one dumb TV show with all your heart?

I was wondering if the ITC British thriller series is on DVD. I remember episodes like the Carnation killer and File it under fear. Has anyone seen these episodes? I believe that this series is from the 1970’s.

When Lost first came out I remember watching the previews and being interested. But when it debuted, I was busy and didn’t watch. Same for the first handful of episodes so I gave up even thinking about watching it since I knew it was a seriel.
But then I got the DVD of the first season and I was HOOKED. I love the way they’ve developed the characters. Much more book-like than tv in that regard.
As for glutting myself on a particular CD, on the way home from NC last week I had the Tarzan soundtrack in (Phil Collins) and track 8 is awesome. I think it’s called Always. Listened to it 10 times in a row, literally. Even my 12 year old said “enough” after a while.

GEEK ALERT! The only TV series I won in DVD is the short-lived sci-fi series Firefly, which Fox cruelly murdered before its time. Great ensemble cast and some of the coolest dialogue ever.
-
Okay, it’s “Babylon 5″ for me. Loved it originally, still do. But I don’t have the sci-fi channel & don’t own them on disc. Gotta have a few shreds of self-restraint….Esp. since I DO have some BBC “Red Dwarf” and watch several hours at a time once in a while.

Being the hardcore geek that I am, I’ve got a list of those a mile long.
My latest obsession has been the new Battlestar Galactica on the sci-fi channel. Hands down some of the best television writing ever. It takes a horrible 70’s show (which I watched religiously, I might add) and makes it believable and gritty and painful to watch.
And I’m with Dusty on Firefly. But then I also loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Let’s face it, I am Joss Whedon’s whore.
-
I watch TV on DVD more than anything else. I have quite a list of series on my shelf, most of which were made prior to 1990 (some prior to 1980). And 90% of them dumb TV, often action-oriented shows. But oh, so fun.
-
I absolutely adored Simon and Simon and McGyver, not to mention Rockford Files.
I’m also hooked on the newest Dr. Who, and I’ve seen all the Poirots with David Suchet - can’t stand the “new” Miss Marple though - talk about butchering!
-
Oh, gosh. Where to start? THE AVENGERS. I wanted to be Mrs. Peel and later Purdery on THE NEW AVENGERS. Then there’s THE PRISONER. I’m still not sure what that show was all about, but it sure kept me hooked! I’ve never cared much for THE SAINT with Roger Moore, but I loved RETURN OF THE SAINT with Ian Ogilvy.
And there are plenty more favorite shows where those came from.
-
“Purdery”? That should be PURDEY.
-
Beverly, check out Amazon.uk. That’s where I found the Pros DVD set. They’ve got tons of stuff. WAY too tempting for an anglophile!
-
Laura, that’s just what I do when I find a CD I love. Play it TO DEATH. I bought the Dixie Chicks new one–and I’ve heard it 30 times in three days. When I like something, I REALLY like it.
-
Some of best series only make it through one season, J.D. I feel your pain. Me loving a series is usually the kiss of death for that production.
-
Cynthia, I will cnfess to owning the entire HIGHLANDER series on video. And — this is the scary part — every now and then I wonder why I didn’t wait for DVD. I haven’t even watched it in years, and yet I STILL think this!
Possession is nine points of the love. That’s my motto.
-
Stephen, I remember the original Battlestar Galactica too–which is why I never gave the new one a chance! Maybe I should rethink.
-
Hey, Heather, one of the things I notice about The Pros is that there’s relatively little dialog. It is a LOT of running, shooting, dying — VERY relaxing. There’s a lot to be said for action series.
-
Well, Reggie, I loved S&S, though Mr. Thrilling takes a dim view of it. He loves Rockford, though, so you’re taste is clearly impeccable.
-
Oh, Tori, child of my heart! I ADORE Purdey. I love her even better than Mrs. Peel. LOVE the New Avengers. I waited years and years for it to come out on DVD.

Oh, yes. You need to rethink. Get the mini-series on DVD. Well worth the time.
-
Regina, Simon & Simon is my latest obsession!
-
Will, I haven’t seen 24 yet, but I’ve heard enough to understand why it would be a favorite.
-
Okay, Stephen, you convinced me. I’ll give it a shot.
-
Heather, I loved Simon & Simon — especially the first couple of seasons. It was so quirky and sort of sweet.
-
If you ever want to learn how to end chapters with cliffhangers, just watch 24.
Lost does a good job of that too.
-
I own every Roswell episode - all three DVD sets.
I also have every episode that was recorded and burned into CD or DVD with the original music.
And I’m stuck in several of the FanFic boards - some good stuff is being written there.
Unfortunately, I’m too old for this sort of obsession - but I guess I’m not listening to me enough.

Hey, Bob, you are NEVER too old for obsession.
