    Desperately Seeking Answers

    Laura Bradford Icon

I’m in the home stretch with my latest novel. The first draft is complete and revisions have begun. Unfortunately, that means my mind is void of clever, witty, and inspiring blog material.

However, being the curious person I am, I’ve decided to throw some questions in your direction (I think that’s called delegation in the corporate world  ).

Be clever, be funny, be sweet, be thought-provoking–it matters not. Just answer the ones you feel like answering and be as honest as possible. Extra points for those who make a GG swoon or smile.

    Here we go…

    1) A writer is a writer because….

    2) The five best words to describe the person you love are…

    3) If you could leave right now and spend a week anywhere in the world, where would you go and with whom?

    4) If you were dropped on an island for the next year and could take only one from each of the following categories, what would you take? Be specific as to each one (ie, WHAT CD, WHAT novel, etc.)

    a. CD

    b. novel

    c. food

    d. movie

    e. ONE additional item of your choosing

    Thanks for playing along everyone!

    Hugs,
    ~Laura

    1. Hey Laura-

Good for you for being in the homestretch stage!

      1) A writer is a writer because….
of the fame and fortune. Oh wait, that’s what I thought before I actually became one. Now I know it’s because there’s no other option. It’s sorta like breathing. Or opening the wine.

      2) The five best words to describe the person you love are…
honest, funny, smart, supportive, generous. That sounds like a dork (or a golden retriever). How about this then: the love of my life.

      3) If you could leave right now and spend a week anywhere in the world, where would go and with whom?
Since we’re pretty worn out from life right now, and it’s starting to get cold, I’m thinking a fabulous beach maybe off the coast of Greece or Spain or Italy. With “the love of my life” (see above).

      4) If you were dropped on an island for the next year and could take only one from each of the following categories, what would you take? Be specific as to each one (ie, WHAT CD, WHAT novel, etc.)

      a. CD–The Essential Springsteen

      b. novel–To Kill a Mockingbird

      c. food–Hmmm. Guacamole.

      d. movie–An American President. Or Fargo.

      e. ONE additional item of your choosing–a case of legal pads and good ink pens. I figure I’d get lots of writing done.

    2. 1) …because the ideas need to be expressed, or one will go mad!!!

      2)…he loves/provides for (the) pets
which makes him ‘the right one for me’

3)Because it’s getting to be spring in the Southern Hemisphere, I’ll say New Zealand.

      4) Breakfast in America (Supertramp)

      East of Eden (Steinbeck)

      Nacho Cheese Doritos

      Highlander (the first movie)

my heart dog, Grendel (I’d like to say my heart man, but he’d lose his mind stuck on an island, which wouldn’t be good for either of us.)

by Kate Hathway on November 6th, 2007 at 9:44 am

    3. 1) A writer is a writer because….

You mean other than the heaps of money and loyal groupies?

Bottom line is I’m good at a small handful of things, many of which I’d never admit to in public. Writing is the only one that’s a decent way to earn a living.

      2) The five best words to describe the person you love are…

FIVE words? Can’t do it. I write novels, people.

      3) If you could leave right now and spend a week anywhere in the world, where would go and with whom?

Oh, I could have a lot of fun with this one. At the moment, I’m not sure I’d be picky about location. Warm would be nice, but I’m never going to object to a cozy room with a fireplace and a mountain view.

All I really need is room service. : )

      4) If you were dropped on an island for the next year and could take only one from each of the following categories, what would you take? Be specific as to each one (ie, WHAT CD, WHAT novel, etc.)

      a. CD: It would have to be a mix. How many songs do I get?

      b. novel: Cloud Atlas

      c. food: Hmmmmm. I’m on an island, right? So will there be abundant tropical fruit ready for harvest? If so, I’m going to need something salty, and at the moment I could go for some jalapeno cheese puffs. Gross, yes. Especially this early in the morning…

      d. movie: Firefly (OK, it’s TV, but I get the whole season, right?)

      e. ONE additional item of your choosing: My body slave, of course!

by Tasha Alexander on November 6th, 2007 at 10:13 am

    4. P.S. Laura, finish that book!

And Kate, I might need to borrow some of your doritos…..

by Tasha Alexander on November 6th, 2007 at 10:13 am

    5. I’m always willing to share Doritos with someone I can have a good conversation with. And even better for you, I won’t ask to share the guacamole!

by Kate Hathway on November 6th, 2007 at 10:23 am

    6. Oops! Sorry, that guac was Judy’s! I really need to get some aspirin - I don’t focus well with a headache.

by Kate Hathway on November 6th, 2007 at 10:25 am

    7. A writer is a writer because otherwise the voices in their head would starting talking to each other, and we can’t have that. They could start a rebellion if they unionize. But seriously, I write because if I didn’t the stories inside my head would make my brain implode.

Five words to describe my husband: The perfect man for me.

If I could leave right now, and go anywhere with someone? I know this place in Charlevoix, MI where you can rent a little cabin on the water. Each one has a fireplace inside, and a jacuzzi tub. I’d take my husband and we’d disappear for a while.

      On an island:
CD - Rachmaninov’s Greatest Symphonies (It’s the only one I can listen to a million times without getting sick of.)

Book - How to Survive in the Tropics

Food - Pizza (or maybe a case of lemons, if I have to catch my own fish)

Movie - Jumpin’ Jack Flash (again, something I can see over and over without getting tired of). Either that or Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

My Choice Thing - My computer. I’d be lost without it.

by B.E. Sanderson on November 6th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

    8. …because the stories must be told.

Sweet, sexy, caring and full of life.

      St John with, (she knows)

A mixed disc of my own selections that would make the bad people give my island a wide berth.

Trinity by Leon Uris. I will have the time!

      bacon of course!

      The Boondock Saints.

A big ass boat with lots of outriggers and an oversized fuel tank!

Congrats on the book, I hope our submissions give you your creative jump start.

by Jim on November 6th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

    9. 1) Because it’s like breathing. You must do it.

      2) Strong, loving, honest, smart, fun.

      3) Hmmm. St. John sounds nice.

      4) CD: Tough one. I’d say a mix of eighties–mostly stuff I can bop around to so I don’t get chubby on that island.

Book: Little House on the Prairie (don’t ask)

      Food: PIZZA!!!!!

      Movie: A Few Good Men

An additional Item: A gold Claddagh earring. Gives me courage, strength and hope.

by Laura on November 6th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

    10. Hey, Judy…if our islands are near each other, can I borrow some paper? But you can have ALL the Guac. Guac? Really????

Kate, I think I’m already going mad but the writing helps curtail. At least I hope so…

Tasha, would that body slave happen to be called, Sven?

B.E., GOOD book! At least one of us has a plan.

Jim, Mmmmm. Bacon? I’ll share some pizza if you share some bacon…

by Laura on November 6th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

    11. About the guacamole (which I do love, especially with those lime chile doritos), it was early and I couldn’t think of just one thing. And it’s good on eggs, too. But, I’m not sure it was my wisest choice.

Yes, you can borrow some paper.

by judy larsen on November 6th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

    12. Lime chile doritos?

The hits just keep on coming, Judy…

If we ever do a Springsteen roadtrip, *I’m* doing the munchie shopping, okay? :D

by Laura on November 6th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

    13. 1) A writer is a writer because….

Because of the wonderful things he does. (Deedly deedly dee.)

      2) The five best words to describe the person you love are…

      Oh boy, where to start?

      4) If you were dropped on an island for the next year and could take only one from each of the following categories, what would you take? Be specific as to each one (ie, WHAT CD, WHAT novel, etc.)

      a. CD

HOW TO BUILD AN OUTRIGGER CANOE (audiobook version)

      b. novel

      The sequel to LONESOME DOVE.

      c. food

      S’more kits.

      d. movie

      AMELIE.

      e. ONE additional item of your choosing

      JetSki.

by Keith on November 6th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

    14. Keith, you might want to watch that first answer. People might mistake you for a midget and we know that guys seem to have a weird interest in midgets… Some day, I hope to stumble upon an explanation for this.

S’mores? Yum! I know a young man, who, at the age of 13, is a S’more making genius. After he gets his marshmallow the way he wants it, he balances a piece of chocolate on a stick and warms it up. So, so, so good!

by Laura on November 6th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

    15. Geez, Laura, have you ever even tried those doritos?

Okay, you can buy the snacks for the road trip (I’ll be so excited to see The Boss I won’t care what we’re munching on!), but can I put in a plea for red licorice?

by judy larsen on November 6th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

    16. Judy, baby, I’ll do the lime chile doritos with you…..

And Laura, you can call the body slave whatever you want. He’ll answer to anything.

by Tasha Alexander on November 6th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

    17. Judy, nope, I must admit, I haven’t tried the doritos. But lime chile? {{Shudder}}.

As for red licorice–you got it! We’ll throw in some bullseyes, some charleston chews, some pretzels, some yoo-hoo (in honor of NJ, of course)…and we’ll be all set.

Tasha, LOL! I will refrain from further comments at this time. But, suffice it to say, these darn icons should have a halo one, don’t you think?

by Laura on November 6th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
