    Seduced By the Perfect Egg-Nog

    Tasha Alexander Icon

Let me start off by making one thing perfectly clear: I don’t like egg-nog. It kinda grosses me out, in fact. Love eggs, but they need to be cooked. Or at least tossed with hot pasta. But a few years back, when I was living in New Haven, my darling, dear, wonderful, much-missed downstairs neighbor, Kristen, popped up to my apartment with a glass of freshly made nog.

How could I turn it down?

    Well, I couldn’t, even though I was sure I wouldn’t like it.

Boy was I wrong. See, something magic happens when you combine egg yolks, milk, sugar, and whipping cream with cognac, Puerto Rican rum, Jamaican rum (yes, you need both kinds), peach brandy, and Applejack. Something magic enough that I’ve wound up whipping up batches of my own year after year. I’ve got a pitcher in the fridge right now.

What are your Christmas traditions? I’m going to be doing my usual: cooking a fabulous dinner for Christmas Eve, and then spending all day Christmas in my pajamas, reading. Last year, I went through three books; it was fantastic. Now if I can just decide what to read first…..

    1. I’m the same way about Egg Nog. The thought doesn’t appeal. However, I’m looking forward to you making a convert out of me this weekend.

    2. We always do lasagna on Christmas Day.

    3. I’d forgotten there was that marvelous stimulant, Applejack, in the world. I’ve got to get a bottle, and my new tradition will be sipping it on Christmas Eve while I read in front of the fire. Thanks for helping me with a new plan (and thanks to all the GG for a lovely year!).

    4. I don’t really do the traditional Christmas thing and it’s a little disturbing to me that I can’t actually remember any traditions from when I was a kid.

I remember fire, though. I’m sure that figures in prominently. And knives for some reason. It’s all kind of a blur.

    5. How about you read a few manuscripts this year? I’ll give you mine, if you want. :D (As if you’re lacking for manuscripts, right?)

We don’t have much in the way of traditions, I’m afraid. We make a big deal out of Christmas Eve, being European and all… Christmas Day is pretty much just for sitting around and letting the kids play with their new toys. Usually we take a walk, to counteract all the eating and sitting.

As always, lovely to have seen you yesterday!

    6. Even though I’m vegetarian, we do pot roast, with egg noddles, applesauce and peas for Christmas dinner. But tonight, I have a party to go to, and I am definitely trying out your eggnog recipe, Tasha!

    7. Merry Christmas, sweetie!

I intend to eat, read, and sun. That’s all. I don’t even think speaking has entered into the equation.

But I will be thinking about you!!!!

    8. Merry Christmas, beautiful girl. And a big dose of strength.

    9. We just try to stay in bed. That’s it. Not getting up at all, that’s our tradition.

    10. Glazed ham with pineapple rings, potatoes, and corn on Christmas day. Tons of cookies and chocolates and candies in the house from Thanksgiving to New Years. Lots of decorations. Presents for everyone - including the cat. On Christmas day, I’ll call home and talk to everyone who’s come to my mother’s house for the holiday. Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby on the CD player. And as much relaxing as I can squeeze out between present opening and cooking dinner. =o)

      Happy Holidays, everyone.

    11. OK, just so everyone knows, Tasha’s recipe for the perfect eggnog is knock-you-down delicious. I made it from scratch (and added a pinch of nutmeg) and it was absolutely fantastic! :D

      So glad you liked it!!!!

      Merry Christmas, everybody!
