    Out For the Day

    Regina Harvey Icon

No, I’m not taking a vacation day. Just going out to sit in the waiting room while one of the kiddies has “a minor procedure.”

Since I’m not going to be able to check in, I thought I’d leave you all with some food for thought from one of the books I gave as a gift this Christmas: In Fact: The Best of Creative Nonfiction, edited by Lee Gutkind. Here are (paraphrased) three tips that really struck me from the Introduction: Notes for Young Writers by Annie Dillard.

Get over your feelings about your work - it’s hard but it’s a skill you can learn.

Have more in your life than writing and reading. A person needs to have a positive impact on their world, interact with people and even exercise. Ignore these words and depression will find you.

Readers are the ones you’re writing for, no matter what. Use them as your gauge of what is interesting and true.

Annie has a couple of dozen more good bits in there (and writes them better than I could), not to mention the fab pieces that come after the Intro. Check it out and enjoy!

    1. Love bit of advice number one–so true and yet so hard to do! Hope all goes well today for you and your kiddie.
