    Free Day

    Sara Rosett Icon

It was like a real-life “Get Out of Jail Free” card.

One whole day wiped clean of all commitments.

It was a snow day! Or, more accurately, an ice day.

When I checked the news at six in the morning last week and realized all normal activities (work, school, karate, etc.) were cancelled, I’d felt like I had an extra “free” day dropped in my calendar.

An entire day to do anything I wanted—except drive, of course, because I wasn’t insane enough to get out on the slick roads.

I spent the day playing board games with my kids, making chocolate chip cookies, and revising 100 pages in my manuscript. It was a perfect day all around.

If you had a “free” day, how would you spend it?

    1. Snow day in Tennessee today, too. The kids are outside playing, and I’m going to the chiropractor because I hurt my back. (No, it had nothing to do with the snow.) I have revisions due this week, so I’ll be working on those whether I want to or not. Maybe it makes me a bad mother - I hope not - but I hate days when the kids are home unexpectedly. It always throws my schedule way out of whack. If I know that they’re going to be here, I can prepare, but not if I wake up at 5:45 to a phone call announcing that schools are closed. It’s nice to watch the snow coming down outside, though, I must admit.

    2. Sounds like you had a fun day with the kids. My daughter doesn’t get snow days. No matter how much snow is on the ground, she can always make it to the dining room for school. ;o)

A whole day free? I’d probably spend it on the couch reading. If gas prices weren’t so darn high, I might spend the day driving around and taking pictures. I love taking pictures.

    3. Glad you enjoyed a nice day with the family, Sara!

Saturday was my sort of free day–after a few hours of writing I decided to have a Home Spa Day. Gave myself a manicure, pedicure and face masque. Refreshed my hair color & took a whirlpool bubble bath. In between, during & after, my time was spent reading Elaine Viets’ HIGH HEELS ARE MURDER.

Oh, yeah, I also went for a walk with my Siberian Husky & picked a handful of daffodils. That night we watched the movie Perfect Strangers with Halle Barry & Bruce Willis. Pretty stressfree day.

I like to have at least 1 free day during the weekend, and just read, watch food & travel shows and talk on the phone to friends. In nice weather we go for a drive & occasionally stop at an antiques shop or roadside market. And like B.E. I take my camera and snap tons of photos along the way!

    5. A call at 5:45 would be enough to take the joy out of anyone’s snow day, Jennie! And, no, you’re not a bad mother because your day is thrown out of whack when the kids are unexpectedly home—I’ve been there, too. :) Hope your back get better fast.

    6. My kids are always saying they wish they were homeschooled–usually when a big test is coming up. I’ll have to remind them that they have it pretty good since snow days are an option. Driving and taking pictures sounds like a great free day, B.E.

    7. Hey, Texas Lynn. What a wonderful day! It sounds like you worked in everything. I’m looking forward to reading HIGH HEElS ARE MURDER, too.
