So…right about now Sara and I should be setting out for the wilds of Pittsburgh — wish us luck!
Obviously I wrote this post ahead of time (in an attempt to distract myself from brooding over my soon-to-be-lost luggage). I have the world’s looniest writing schedule right now — I may have mentioned that last week — and I find I’m really looking forward to the hour of gardening I treat myself to in the mornings.
I know it sounds weird to look forward to pulling weeds and mixing up batches of fish fertilizer, but I find this time really relaxing. Something about the combination of physical labor, fresh air and sunshine, the scent of flowers — and not having to think (too much) is really proving good for my creative energy. Which is fortunate because I can use all the creative engergy I can get right now.
So how do you spend that very limited amount of free time when you’re in the midst of writing? What do you do to unwind, to re-energize when you’re still working to meet a deadline? Or even if you’re not on a deadline, what do you do to recharge those creative batteries?
Oh, and if you don’t hear from Sara and me by next week…send out the St. Bernards. Preferably the ones with the brandy casks attached to their collars.

It was such a thrill to once again eat, drink and be merry with (almost) all the Good Girls at Malice. Sorry to miss you Tasha. This was my third Malice and it was like coming home…after 27 hours travel time, a large percentage of it in the air, knowing that Diana was going to be waiting with a g&t in hand and wildly funny conversation, PLUS a wicked chocolate dessert almost makes the entire trip worthwhile. Cocktails after the Agatha banquet were fun and educational; it was great having a chance to reconnect with Sara and Regina. Thank you ladies for making a woman a long way from home feel welcome and I wish you all the best of luck with publishers, purchasers and future endeavors.

I still am writing when the mood hits rather than daily (bad Lynn!) but I found this afternoon after driving for the third consecutive day back from Vegas, that my imagination tends to take over, even when I’m bone tired.
I saw a fireplace off the highway in Missouri. It took me off on a writing jag on how to finish my middle school novel. Now, I just have to get the middle done. ::)
Have fun in Pittsburgh and I’m sorry I missed the GG’s at Malice. Maybe next year!

Hey, Jan! I’m so glad we had a chance to have dinner together. It was a great trip altogether — very different from previous Malice’s but energizing as always. And it’s such a great time for touching base with friends who live — literally — at the ends of the earth.

Lynn, Malice is always a treat, but I have to say the roadtrip with Sara was definitely the highlight of my travels.
More details to follow…
