    Questions, questions, questions….

    Tasha Alexander Icon

I’m sitting here cozy, loving a rainy autumn night, having just finished a spectacular read, starting to let the seeds of a new book form in my head. Don’t have much yet. Just the setting (in broad terms). And one line that I want Colin to say to Emily (which undoubtedly won’t end up in the novel). I find that when I’m in these early stages, when I don’t even have enough to begin research, I’m mainly letting my subconscious percolate–if I think too hard, the ideas slip out of my grasp. Which means I’m in dire need of distraction. So tell me:

    1. If you’re a writer, what’s the hardest part of writing a book? If you’re a reader, what’s the best part to read?

    2. What’s the most exotic place you’ve ever visited?

    3. What’s the most luxurious purchase you’ve ever made?

    4. When’s the last time you stayed up all night?

    5. What song can you not stop listening to?

    Have a great weekend!

P.S. A very happy birthday to Christina Chen yesterday and Laura Caldwell today!!!!!!

    1. Percolating is good!

      Fun questions, Tasha…

      1) Hardest part of writing? When you’ve got TOO many ideas and not enough time.

      2) Most exotic place? New Jersey.

      3) Luxurious purchase? At the risk of alienating those against such a purchase, I think I’d have to say my brown leather jacket. It was nothing but a pure splurge (with a royalty check) and I loved every minute of it.

      4) Stayed up all night? Hmmm. I think that would be last spring when I was working at the bookstore. Did an overnight with the “kids” and had a blast. Didn’t get to sleep for 36 hours.

      5) I have a bunch. But for now, I’d say Amazed by Lonestar (I’d love to have someone love me like that).

    2. 1. If you’re a writer, what’s the hardest part of writing a book? If you’re a reader, what’s the best part to read?
      Chapter 6

      2. What’s the most exotic place you’ve ever visited?
There’s a place on Lake McCall in Idaho that feels just magical. I can’t explain it but the beauty brought me to tears.

      3. What’s the most luxurious purchase you’ve ever made?
Either a $20 chef knife that I love every time I use it or the $50 stock pot we bought then burned chicken soup on the bottom so bad it had to be thrown away.

      4. When’s the last time you stayed up all night?
One of our dart trips to Vegas.

      5. What song can you not stop listening to?
I do love Amazed (nice pick Laura) but right now I’m into Do you Believe me Now? And Don’t think I don’t Think about it. Both the voices are amazing. There are a lot of good country songs out right now. Cheater, cheater. And Toby’s new one.

    3. 1. The hardest part for me is the middle section of a novel, when the first blush of excitement has worn off and I’m wondering if I really have enough story here to make it for another 50,000 words to the part where stuff blows up without boring the pants off of everybody.

      2. Most exotic place: Chinatown, San Francisco

      3. Most luxurious purchase: My old V8 Mustang GT. Damn thing ran faster’n a scalded dog.

      4. Last time I stayed up all night: Heh. I’ll never tell.

      5. Song I can’t stop listening to: “Drunken Poet’s Dream” by Hayes Carll.

    4. Hey Tasha, I love that percolating sub-conscious-y time when a new book is all fuzzy, too.

      1. If you’re a writer, what’s the hardest part of writing a book? If you’re a reader, what’s the best part to read?

I’d have to agree with Will–that middle part of draft one, when it’s all still a mess and I can’t see the ending. But I know i have to just plow through.

      2. What’s the most exotic place you’ve ever visited?

Hmm, I’m, not sure it counts as exotic, but I guess the farthest from home/most away place would be Arles, a little town in the south of France. I still say if I ever run away it’ll be to there.

      3. What’s the most luxurious purchase you’ve ever made?

Last April when I bought myself a Chrysler Sebring convertible (after having “mom” cars for 21 years. I love it.

      4. When’s the last time you stayed up all night?

I don’t know but I’m sure it had something to do with one of my kids–and not in a good/fun way.

      5. What song can you not stop listening to?

Probably “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” by Springsteen. But mostly I’m glued to MSNBC.

    5. Okay, I’ll weigh in as a reader -
1)The best part to read, for me, is something in (generally) the first three chapters that lets me know that I’m going to enjoy reading the rest. That’s followed closely by something in the last three chapters that wraps everything up well enough that I start looking forward to reading more by that author.

2)Most exotic place… uh, does Oklamhoma City count?

3)Most luxurious purchase would have to be the marble-topped antique table I bought to go with the one I inherited, and if I had the money to get them properly repaired by a good carpenter, that would be my next luxury purchase.

4)Last time I stayed up all night - about 6 weeks ago, I had a bout of insommnia (that’s what I call it when I get sucked into websurfing late at night).

5)What song can I not stop listening to? I know that some will say silly things, but a new album, Venus in Overdrive, by Rick Springfield, has 4 songs I keep listening to over and over - I’ll Miss That Someday and One Passenger are 2 of them - don’t judge until you listen - they are awesomely good.

    6. 1. I’m def. “just a reader” and the best part to read is the story in general. I could totally hate a character but keep reading if it’s a good story. (Weird, I know)

      2. Exotic place? Paris. I was only 16 at the time and it was wild to be in another country.

      3. Does my bed count? Simple yet I never want to leave it. Either that or there was my wedding gown… :-)

      4. Over the past summer I think I was up all night reading. If I’m out and about I’m a total wuss and am home by 3 or 4.

      5. This one is easy, Two Step by the Dave Matthews Band. It’s my husband’s ringtone so I hear it quite often during the day. :D

    7. 1. If you’re a reader, what’s the best part to read?

** The introduction of the hero/heroine…sometimes that’s at the beginning, sometimes it’s in the middle, and sometimes it’s late in the game. :-) I just like to learn who they are and what their story is.

      2. What’s the most exotic place you’ve ever visited?

      ** Ummmmm…Lost Springs, Wyoming?

      3. What’s the most luxurious purchase you’ve ever made?

** It might be this new MacBook Pro I’m typing on…although, I’m not sure a computer can be considered luxurious.

      4. When’s the last time you stayed up all night?

** On purpose? I try to avoid that at all costs…the last time was probably in college…and I won’t tell you how long ago that was.

      5. What song can you not stop listening to?

** Anything Matt Nathanson sings. I can’t pick just one. I just can’t stop listening to him!
