You’ll never guess who I hung out with last night!
Well, yes, you will, as soon as I show you this picture.
Yep, that’s right, people: I partied with the fantabulous Sue Grafton!
The above is, unfortunately, the only picture from the evening’s festivities. I saw the car sitting in the driveway when I arrived, and I just couldn’t resist asking DH to snap a shot on our way past. But it didn’t seem right to keep taking photos once we got inside the house, since it was a private party and that sort of thing is frowned upon in polite company, you know?
That didn’t stop me from buttonholing the great author and pouring most of my life story into her ear, though. Including soliciting advice on my career.
(Yes, I really was that uncouth. But my God, people, it was Sue Grafton, and how often do you get a chance like that?!)
Anyway, she was wonderful, and extremely gracious, in spite of my reverting to fifth grade and going all giddy fangirl on her. She even let me hug her. Twice. And she asked for my email address, so I guess I can’t have ticked her off too terribly much. Unless she’s planning to send me a message detailing just how annoying and obnoxious I was being, of course…
Although I don’t think so. Crime writers as a breed are overall some of the nicest people you’ll meet, and Sue Grafton was certainly no exception.
At any rate, quite a red letter day for me. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to preorder my new best friend’s latest. ‘U is for Undertow’ is right around the corner. Kinsey, darling, here I come!
Till next time!

LOL. Some people get excited about meeting the president or Donald Trump or Pamela Anderson. You can tell a writer by the level of excitement we get by meeting other writers. I went through a country music stage where I have several pics with me and different artists, and that was before I left Idaho.
I still would die to meet Kid Rock.

Thanks for letting me live the giddy fangirl life through you, Bente! I’d have been exactly the same way in your place. Sue rocks!
Can you imagine committing yourself to writing a 26-book series? She’s awesome.

Lynn, Kid Rock? Really?
Yeah, definitely we writers get a big kick out of meeting other writers. My personal dream-date is Barbara Mertz/Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters. There are several others I’d go out of my way to encounter, too. As for musicians, I’ve actually met a few of the country music ones, since I live in Nashville. Overall, they tend to be down-to-earth nice people, too. Haven’t encountered Kid Rock, though. He was here, and got arrested for brawling, a few years back, but that’s as close as I got. Same town.
Karen, no, I can’t imagine committing myself to writing a 26-book series. And Sue didn’t either, she said. They’ve all been 2-3 book contracts. I guess she could have stopped at any time, although once you start with A and B, you’re pretty much committed to following through to the end of the alphabet, I guess. Although if you don’t want to… She’ll be done by 2020, just FYI.
I am just in awe of all authors. I stood behind the door when God handed out the talent of writing, but I was first in line when he double dosed me with the art of bitchin’

LOL, Lidia.
Very cool, Jennie!!! That sounds like an evening you won’t soon forget! Just remember how gracious she was so you can do the same in a few years when there’s a “Jennie” fawning over you!!!
What a great experience! And at least you were in a more dignified position to meet Sue Grafton than I was when I met Nora Roberts. Which was crawling around on the floor under a table–way to make an impression, huh?
(I was helping set up for a conf. event and we were trying to find certain books stored under some of the tables).
Heather, I’d totally love to meet Nora Roberts. Preferably while I’m not crawling around on the floor, though. Although, you know, she’d probably remember you. And memorable is good.
Lidia, bitchin’ is a very useful gift. I’ve been blessed with some of my own, I’m happy to say.
Laura, yes. If that day ever arrives, I’ll be channeling Sue. Or one of the other super-nice and super-successful authors I’ve met. Really, crime writers are just some of the nicest people!
Jennie,
What can I say, I love the bad boys! I have to say, when he sings country, I melt…

Lynn, I like the bad boys, too - in theory. In real life, though, I tend to go for the lower maintenance. I have to say I find Clint Black to be quite sweet. Very good natured. His wife is lovely, as well. Perfectly normal people, you know? Except not…
I think maybe that’s what I like about authors, too. They’re perfectly normal, usually not stuck up at all, and at the same time, they totally build worlds…!
